Cornelius "Connie" Sullivan

       Cornelius “Connie” Sullivan, retired Burlington Recreation Department employee passed away after a brief illness at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington on Thursday night, December 8, 2005. He was 77 years old. Mr. Sullivan was born in Somerville, the son of Irish immigrants, the late Cornelius and Hanorah Sullivan. He grew up and was educated in Somerville. He enlisted in the Army only days before his eighteenth birthday. He served as an Radio Operator and held the rank of Tec 5. He was the recipient of the WW II Victory Medal and the Army of the Occupation Medal Japan.
     In 1956 he married his wife Catherine and began their life together in Medford. After 7 years in Medford, they settled in Burlington. He loved landscaping and flower gardening and found his ideal job as a member of the Burlington Recreation Department Maintenance Staff. He took great pride in his job and especially of his maintenance and improvements of the Burlington Common. He retired after 14 years with the Town. He had previously worked for 21 years as an agent for John Hancock Insurance and for the security department at Itek Corporation.
     Mr. Sullivan was proud to be apart of the community. He was a member of the Burlington American Legion. He was a Third and Fourth Degree member of the Burlington Knights of Columbus. As a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, he held the position of Navigator and was a member of the Honor Guard. He was a faithful parishioner and usher at Saint Margaret’s Church for 42 years.
     Mr. Sullivan had a number of interests. He loved people. His outgoing personality, made him many friends. He was a voracious reader. He had a hobby collecting Die Cast Trucks. He was meticulous about how he maintained his yard. He loved gardening and flowers and his yard always was filled with color. He was very proud of his Irish heritage and his ancestry. He traveled to Ireland and Italy. He loved music and dancing.
     Mr. Sullivan’s most significant accomplishment was his family. He was happily married to his wife Cathy for 49 years. They did almost everything together. He was extremely proud of his 2 daughters, Lorraine and Karen. And as for his grandchildren, some might say that he was excessively proud of them. He went to their dances, recitals, plays, baseball games, musicals, and other important events in their lives. Some might say, that once he started talking about his grandchildren, it was hard to get him to stop. He was loved by his family and will be greatly missed.
     Mr. Sullivan is the husband of Catherine A. (Selvitella) Sullivan. He is the loving father of Lorraine & her husband Thomas Guthrie of N. Reading and Karen & her husband Patrick McIntyre of Wilmington. He is the brother of Mary Bowen of Walpole & her late husband Thomas, Joan Sullivan of N. Brookfield, Daniel & his wife Pauline of Hudson, Thomas & his wife Judi of Newbury, Katherine Clooney & her husband Michael of Hopkinton, and the late John Sullivan. He is the brother-in-law of Helen Sullivan of NY. He is the grandfather of Maura, Thomas, & Daniel Guthrie and Morgan & Sloane McIntyre and Godfather of Mary Lou Stretton, John Sullivan, Christopher Sullivan, Maureen Barry, Susan Petrillo and Laurie Schmidt. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
     Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Monday, Dec. 12 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret’s Church at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Sunday 3-7 p.m. Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Connie’s name may be made to the St. Margaret’s Church Building Fund, 111 Winn St., Burlington, MA 01803 or the Knights of Columbus Exceptional Children’s Fund, P.O.
