Eric A. Mattson, a retired engineer, passed way after a brief
illness at his home, on Thursday evening, July 14, 2005.
He was 64 years old.
Mr. Mattson was born and raised in Cambridge.
He was a graduate of Rindge Technical School in
Cambridge. He
served in the Air Force from November 1960 to August of 1964.
He achieved the rank of Airman Third Class.
He was stationed at Dow Air Force Base in Maine.
During his time in the service he attended the University
of Maine. He later
furthered his education at Northeastern University.
Mr. Mattson worked as an engineer.
He worked for The Stark Draper Laboratory for over 37
years. In his early
years with The Stark Draper Laboratory he worked with the early
development of highly advanced and sophisticated solid state
circuitry. During
those years he had the opportunity to work on the research
Vessel Atlantis II as it traveled across the Equator.
At the end of his career, he was focusing on micro
mechanical inertia instrument development. He retired in 2003 and was recognized for his service to the
national interest in applied research, engineering development,
education and technology transfer.
Mr. Mattson had been a resident of Burlington for the
past 7 years. He
had previously resided in Billerica and Cambridge.
In his leisure time, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed a
good game of billiards. He played in an adult softball for years.
He enjoyed history and crossword puzzles.
He also enjoyed working in his garden.
Mr. Mattson is the beloved husband of
Lorraine M. (O’Rourke-Murray) Mattson.
He is the father of Kimberly of North Reading, and the
late James Mattson. He
is the step-father of Richard Budd of Leominster and Mary
Sullivan of Burlington. He
is predeceased by his brother, Carl Mattson and sister, Carol
Jenkins. Visiting hours will be held at the Edward V. Sullivan
Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128,
Woburn side) on Sunday, July 17 from 4-7 p.m. Relatives and
friends respectfully invited. Interment will be private.
