George F. Martino a resident of Burlington for 49 years and an
avid golfer, passed away after a brief illness at the Lahey
Clinic Medical Center in Burlington on Saturday morning, June
18, 2005. He was 84 years old. Mr. Martino was born in Boston,
the son of Italian immigrants, the late Gaetano and Lucia
Martino. He grew up and was educated in the North End of Boston.
He furthered his education at North Bennett Street Industrial
School where he learned the skill of watch making. He also
attended the University of Lowell.
Mr. Martino joined the Army 4 months
after Pearl Harbor and served until January of 1946 as a
Technician Fifth Class. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct
Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the World War II
Victory Medal.
Mr. Martino worked for 36 years at
Raytheon in Waltham as a Quality Control Supervisor. In his
retirement years he enjoyed playing golf on every Wednesday with
the seniors at the Woburn Country Club and then on Fridays at
Green Meadows Golf Course in Hudson, NH. He could also be seen
golfing at the numerous charity golf tournaments. He is one of
the lucky few golfers who have had several “Holes in One”.
Mr. Martino was a stained glass
artisan. He specialized in creating stained glass lamps, which
he made for his home and his family. He loved sports. He knew
the importance of family and always made his grandchildren feel
special by attending their Hockey, Baseball, Basketball,
Gymnastics and Dancing events. He was also quite a chef. He
especially enjoyed cooking Italian dishes. His homemade raviolis
and pizzelles were always delicious.
Mr. Martino is the beloved husband of
Roberta S. (Bailey) Martino. He is the loving father of Laura
& her husband Jack Groele of Chelmsford, Susan & her
husband Mark Coneeny of Andover and Karen & her husband
Joseph Spinale of Andover. He is the brother of Carmella Spera
of Medford and the late Margaret Abbruzzi, Ralph, John &
Anthony Martino, Matthew, Antoinette, Thomas, Rosario, &
Josephine Spera. He is the loving Papa and Grandpa of Scott,
Kaitlyn, Sarah, David, Kristen, Amanda, Jennifer, Erika, Brett,
Joey & Jamie. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St.,
BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Tuesday, June
21 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St.
Margaret’s Church, Burlington at 10 a.m. Visiting hours Monday
4-8 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials
in George’s name may be made to St. Margaret’s Building
Fund, 111 Winn St., Burlington, MA 01803.
