Roland
J. Igo, a long-time resident of Burlington and Gloucester,
passed away at the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital on
Saturday, January 28, 2006. He was 79 years old.
Mr.
Igo was born in Waltham. He was the son of the late Roland
L. & Lillian Igo. Mr. Igo was raised and educated in
Waltham. He was a graduate of St. Charles High School in
Waltham. Mr. Igo was a Veteran of World War II serving his
country for three years in the United States Navy as a Seaman 2nd
Class and Electricians Mate 2nd Class.
Following his military service, Mr. Igo began a long and
meritorious career with the Department of Defense as a Technical
Engineer. Over his 43 years with the Federal Government he
worked with the Airborne Research Office working on aircraft
design and redesign. In 1972 he entered the ESD systems
arena as an Electronics Equipment Specialist. He would
again move to become a System Support Manager in cutting edge
Air Defense Radar Systems. In 1980 he was appointed as
Chief of the Air Defense Systems Directorate Configuration
Management Division. He was recognized for his outstanding
professional ability and his vital contributions to the United
States ability to defend its air space by being awarded the Air
Force Outstanding Civilian Career Service Medical.
Mr.
Igo and his wife Virginia settled in Burlington where they
raised their five children and became an integral part of the
community. Mr. Igo was a 4th Degree member of the
Knights of Columbus Council 77 in Woburn and then became a
charter member of council 4978 in Burlington. He was also very
involved in St. Margaret’s Church. He was the Past
President of St. Margaret’s Holy Name Society and President of
the Mr. and Mrs. Club. He was a Lecturer and Eucharistic
Minister and was also the coordinator of all the Lecturers and
Eucharistic Ministers within St. Margaret’s. He also
served on St. Margaret’s Parish Council. He enjoyed
spending time with his family at his second home in Gloucester.
Mr. Igo was a member of the Wingaersheek Golf Club and was a
longtime Treasurer in the club as well.
Mr. Igo is the beloved husband of 58 years to Virginia M. (Cusick).
He is the loving father of R. James Igo of Gloucester, Edward G.
Igo of Burlington & Gloucester, Christine Igo Wetzel &
her husband Eric Wetzel of Burlington, Virginia M. & her
husband Mark Sarazin of Gloucester, Julie Ann & her husband
David Albany of Maple Glen, PA. He is the beloved father-in-law
of Mary Igo of Burlington and brother of Margaret Donahue of
Weston and the late Bernadette Lirette. He is
the loving and proud grandfather of Michael, Timothy, &
Christopher Igo of Burlington, R. Derek, C. Kurtis, C. Olivia,
& E. Cameron Wetzel of Burlington, Virginia M., Elizabeth M.
and James R. Albany of Maple Glen, PA, Kyle E. & Corey R.
Sarazin of Gloucester.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St.,
BURLINGTON (Exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Thursday,
February 2 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian
Burial in St. Margaret’s Church at 10 a.m. Visiting
hours Wednesday 2-4 pm & 6-8 pm. Interment in Chestnut
Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials in Roland’s name
may be made to St. Margaret’s Building Fund, 111 Winn St.,
