Grandpa Remembrance
For the past six years, my
Grandpa and Nonnie have lived with me and my family. It was a
wonderful feeling when they moved in. During these years
together we have dealt with the expansion of our house, new
family members, fights, tears, death and laughter. I don’t
know what it would have been like without Grandpa and Nonnie
being there for us.
Grandpa and Nonnie were married for 46 years…they met in high
school and started dating their senior year. Grandpa loved to
tease Nonnie all the time. In front of us kids he’d try to
make it look like he was the boss… but we all know who the
boss really was! Nonnie and Grandpa may have thrived on teasing
each other, but it was clear to ALL of us, especially these last
few months, that they had a special love for one another that
only grew stronger.
My grandpa was such a great person…if you were to ask him what
his greatest accomplishment was, he would say his four children
and twelve grandchildren. He loved to be involved in everything
we did…he would watch quietly from the sidelines at ballgames,
soccer games, ice skating, hockey and dance recitals. He always
made sure everyone was taken care of. Each day he put loose
change in a jar on the kitchen windowsill…he liked to make
sure we had enough money for lunch. When we got a good report
card he would give us a few dollars as a reward. When we got
home from school he would be waiting for that door to open and
say “Hi girls! How was your day?” In big and small ways,
Grandpa was always there for us.
There are lots of favorite memories of my grandpa and I’d like
to share just a few more with you… One of his favorite sayings
was, “How!” This was his standard greeting to us grandkids.
We’ll always remember him sitting in his big comfy chair,
watching re-runs of MASH and JAG, as well as any John Wayne
movie there was. He would laugh as if he was seeing them all for
the first time! We’ll always remember that special laugh.
He loved watching baseball and football – especially with his
friends at the VFW! He was thrilled to experience a World Series
win by the Red Sox. Grandpa also enjoyed playing bocce and golf,
and he loved going down to the Cape.
Grandpa was a hard worker. He started a small trucking company,
PCM Trucking, many years ago and was pleased that his sons
joined him in his profession. Together they grew the business
into what it is today. Seems like almost everyone in the family
has been a part of the business in some way…even some of us
grandkids have had the opportunity to work there. Grandpa told
me many times how proud he was of his boys and others in the
family for working at the shop and for making the business
successful. The business is a special legacy that he has left
for his family.
Grandpa was also very proud of his only daughter and always
considered her his baby, no matter how old she was.
Did you know that our grandpa was a gourmet cook? Well, maybe
not a true gourmet, but he did have a couple of specialties that
he was very proud of…meat loaf and peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches!
Did you also know our Grandpa was a handy-dandy craftsman? He
and Elmer’s Super Glue were best of buddies!
Grandpa loved his morning coffee…he had a favorite coffee cup
– a tall Tazmanian Devil mug that held a LOT of coffee. Every
morning he would fill it to the top and then spill half of it on
his way from the kitchen to his chair. Whenever anyone was
looking for Grandpa, I’d tell them to follow the trail. Of
course, his pal Simba would go behind, cleaning it up!
Grandpa really loved our dog, Simba. Not too long ago, Simba
died and Grandpa was heart broken. The last time he saw Simba,
he told him that he’d see him soon. It’s good to know that
these two pals are together.
My grandpa liked things to be short and sweet and to the point.
So, I guess I’d better wrap this up…
Grandpa had a big heart, a big sense of humor, and a big love
for his family and his friends. We shared many good times that
will never be forgotten. Grandpa holds a very special place in
all of our hearts and we will miss him. Every night before I
went to bed, Grandpa would give me a salute. So today Grandpa, I
am saluting you. [Salute] And, knowing you never liked goodbyes,
we are here today to honor you and say, “We miss you, we love
you and, instead of goodbye…we’ll see ya later!”
I love you.
