George E. Bennett, a Retired Cambridge Fire Fighter, passed away
at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center
in Burlington after a brief battle with lung cancer on Monday
night, September 19, 2005. He was 70 years old. Mr.
Bennett was born in Cambridge the son of Frederick and Mary
Bennett who had immigrated to Cambridge from Nova Scotia.
He grew up and was educated in Cambridge and Belmont. He
went on to serve in the Army, where he was stationed in Alaska.
He was discharged in 1963. He then joined the Cambridge
Fire Department. He started on the Rescue Squad. He
was stationed in a number of Fire Houses and eventually retired
in 1999 as a Lieutenant in Engine 4 in Cambridge.
Mr. Bennett and his wife Joan settled in Burlington
in 1972 to raise their children. Involved in his
children’s interests, he was an Assistant Scout Master for the
Boy Scouts as well as a coach for Little League Baseball.
He also enjoyed playing softball and bowling with his fellow
firefighters and their families. He was a parishioner at
Saint Margaret’s Church and a big Red Sox fan. For the
past 20 years he had also worked for Given Erwin Florist as a
delivery person. He enjoyed meeting people and brightening
their day when he made his deliveries.
Mr. Bennett is the beloved husband of Joan M. (Lynch) Bennett.
He is the devoted father of Stephen of Hollywood, FL, Stacey of
S. Boston, and Lisa of Burlington. He is the brother of Edmund
of Weymouth, the late Marie Rosa, Margaret “Peg” Hardy,
Claire Banner, Frederick, Francis, and Joseph. He is the proud
grandfather of Michaela Bennett of Hollywood,
FL.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43
Winn St., BURLINGTON (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on
Friday, Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian
Burial in St. Margaret’s Church at 10 a.m. Visiting hours
Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Interment in Pine Haven Cemetery,
Burlington. Memorials in George’s name may be made to the St.
Margaret’s Building Fund, 111 Winn St., Burlington, MA 01803. Retired
Cambridge Fire Fighter and employee of Given Erwin Florist.
