Joseph J. McDermott
passed away surrounded by his family after a long illness at the
Hospice House in Reading on Saturday afternoon, July 24, 2004.
He was 77 years old. Mr. McDermott was born in Cambridge,
the son of the late Richard and Clara McDermott. He grew
up and was educated in Cambridge. He served in the Navy
during WW II as a Seaman First Class. During the war, he
was stationed on the USS Cooner and the USS Shasta. He was
the recipient of the WW II Victory Medal and the American Area
Ribbon. After the war, he came back to Cambridge and
took a Chef’s position at Harvard University. He retired
from Harvard University after 43 years of employment. Mr.
McDermott was a devote Catholic and an active member of St.
Barbara’s Church in Woburn. He enjoyed cooking and
working around his home.
Mr. McDermott is the husband of 32 years of Mary (Amante)
McDermott. He is the loving father of Mary Ann Harris
& her husband, Lon, of Lewis Center, OH, Patricia Stanhope
of Natick, Joseph McDermott & his wife, Beth, of Tewksbury,
Anthony Zermani of Pensacola, FL, and Joseph Zermani & his
wife, Ellen, of Rockport. He is the brother of Catherine
Amiss of Bristol, RI and the late Clara McDermott. He is
the father-in-law of the late Jerry Stanhope. He is the devoted
grandfather of 9.
Funeral from the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St.,
BURLINGTON, (exit 34 off Rt. 128, Woburn side) on Wednesday,
July 28 at 9 a.m. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St.
Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Rd, Woburn, at 10 a.m.
Visiting hours Tuesday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Forest Glen
Cemetery, Reading. Memorials in Joseph’s name may be made to
the VNA of Middlesex-East & Visiting Nurse Hospice, 607
North Avenue, Suite 17, Wakefield, MA 01880.
